Do you qualify for down payment help or a grant?
No tool can promise a grant. This one shows where to look for help in your area, what each source offers and what to ask, so you apply to the right places.

Where help comes from
Buyer help can come from the state housing finance agency, a city or county housing department, a lender, an employer or a nonprofit. In Texas that includes the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) and the Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation, along with City of Houston and Harris County programs. Programs open, close and change funding often, so always confirm details with the program itself.
Grant, forgivable loan or repayable loan
- Grant: money you do not repay.
- Forgivable loan: forgiven over time if you stay in the home.
- Repayable second loan: repaid when you sell, refinance or pay off the first loan.
Avoid grant scams
- Real government and nonprofit programs do not charge a fee to apply or to release funds.
- Be wary of anyone who contacts you out of the blue promising guaranteed money.
- Apply directly with the program and check its address and phone number yourself.
Questions about this tool
Does this say I qualify?
No. It is a pre-screen that points to places to look. Each program decides who qualifies.
Does assistance have to be repaid?
It depends on the program. Some is grant money, some is forgiven over time and some is repaid when you sell or refinance. Ask each program.
Can I use assistance with any loan?
Not always. Programs often work only with certain loans and participating lenders. Ask your lender which ones they work with.

These tools give general estimates from the numbers you enter. They do not replace advice from a Texas attorney, a CPA or a licensed lender. Captain Saves A Home buys houses, so we have an interest in a sale, and we will tell you honestly when another option fits better.
